Custom Decorated Cookies: Baking Beyond Expectations

How can you create show-stoppers like this graduation balloon arch cookie?

Turn those happy customers into raving fans with this secret weapon! In the world of custom decorated cookies, exceeding expectations is the key to building a loyal customers. While following a customer's vision is crucial, sometimes (almost always) going the extra mile can create a truly memorable experience.

Here's a recent example: a customer sent a sample photo for graduation cookies. Knowing them personally, I was familiar with the balloon arch they planned for the event. This sparked an idea - what if I designed a cookie that mirrored the balloon design?

Here's the magic:

  • Surprise Factor: This additional cookie design wasn't part of the original order, creating a delightful surprise for the customer.

  • Always Get Approval (Usually): When designing unapproved cookies, I typically include them as extras or seek the customer's okay beforehand. In this case, knowing the customer's taste, I felt confident they'd love it but stil included them as extras just in case!

But how do you find these extra design details for your custom decorated cookie sets?

Here are some tips:

  • Social Media: Check the customer's Pinterest boards! Often, event inspiration boards reveal details you can incorporate into the cookie design.

  • Think Outside the Box: A little extra effort goes a long way. Look for ways to tie in other elements of the event with the cookies. You can even ask your customer for some examples of their event decor/location/guest of honor, etc. to gain some additional ideas.

  • Every customer is unique: Everyone wants to be celebrated for who they are as an individual. Try to find ways to make every set of cookies (even the most basic), unique.

The Payoff:

Exceeding expectations like this does two things:

  • Customer Loyalty: When customers feel valued and surprised, they come back for more!

  • Word-of-Mouth Marketing: A delighted customer becomes a walking advertisement, referring friends and family your way.

A Word of Caution: While this approach can be fantastic, it's not foolproof. Consider these points:

  • Always Include Extras: If unsure, present the unapproved designs as "extra" cookies.

  • Not Everyone Likes Surprises: Some customers prefer complete control. Always respect their wishes.

Remember:

The goal is to create a memorable cookie experience. By putting in the extra effort and exceeding expectations, you'll transform happy customers into lifelong fans!s!
